In 1969, the newspaper reflected the severe oppression of the Party by law enforcement.

In 1969, the newspaper expressed solidarity with international struggles for liberation and started its flagship program, Free Breakfast for Children. FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover declared the Black Panther Party “the greatest threat to the internal security of the United States.” Law enforcement raided Party offices and pads and killed Illinois Chairman Fred Hampton and Defense Captain Mark Clark.
