On August 24, 1968, the Young Lords sponsored a Puerto Rican Heritage Festival at the Armitage Methodist Church, 834 West Armitage Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. The Young Lords called this church “The People’s Church.”

The Heritage Festival was held two months after the Young Lords took over the church. On the right is Omar López, Minister of Information for the Young Lords and one of the Historical Preservation Society’s advisors.

Heritage Preservation is Our Duty to History

Slavery and oppression indeed robbed generational wealth from our people. We also have a rich cultural heritage that must be uncovered and preserved.

Every generation is responsible for cultural heritage preservation to move humanity forward.

Thank you for helping us with this work.
