Celebrating 60 Years of the Black Panther Party

Members of the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party and community gathered at a Black Panther Party Heritage Trail event in Chicago.

Today we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale on October 15, 1966.

As we honor this milestone anniversary, we also remember the men and women of the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party and all they gave in service and sacrifice.

Happy Anniversary, Comrades.

Thank you for all you’ve done and continue to do in service to the people. We appreciate you sharing your history with us, as well as the history of fallen comrades who are no longer here to speak for themselves.

Black Panther Party History Month continues all month long, and we invite you to continue partnering with us in the work of documenting and preserving the history of the Illinois Chapter, including creating the Black Panther Party Heritage Trail in Illinois, our Oral History Collection, publications, historic preservation work, and public programs.

So far, we have raised $4,300 toward our $25,000 goal. Donate today, and your contribution will be matched by the Joseph and Bessie Feinberg Foundation, up to $25,000.

Thank you to Charles Koffman for his generous support, to our new monthly donors, and to everyone who has donated or made a contribution pledge.

Thank you for continuing to support this work.

In solidarity,

Leila Wills
Executive Director
Historical Preservation Society of the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party

P.S. We expect to have news to share about our Heritage Trail plaque installations in early November. Please hang in there with us! 😩😊
