Historic Moment in Chicago–For the First Time, Black Panther Survivors Reunite to Honor Fred Hampton & Mark Clark
Fred Hampton and Mark Clark, Presente!
On Wednesday, December 3, 2025, the Historical Preservation Society of the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party held its second annual observance honoring Deputy Chairman Fred Hampton and Defense Captain Mark Clark, who were assassinated in a pre-dawn, FBI-coordinated police raid on December 4, 1969.
For the first time, all survivors of the December 4, 1969, raid gathered together in a public program. Their presence offered the community an unprecedented moment of remembrance, reflection, and collective acknowledgment of the Illinois Chapter’s enduring role in the struggle for justice.
“As an organization, we are deeply honored to host the survivors, their families, and members of the Illinois Chapter,” said representatives of the Historical Preservation Society. “Our mission is to preserve and share this history with accuracy, dignity, and unity. Bringing people together is central to that work.”
December 3, 1969, was the final night Fred Hampton and Mark Clark spent with their comrades and the world. As the sun set 56 years later, the people gathered to amplify their light, celebrate their lives, and recommit to preserving the truth of their legacy.
The Historical Preservation Society extends its gratitude to everyone who stood in solidarity and remembrance at Site 2 of the Black Panther Party Heritage Trail in Illinois.
