Historical Markers Update

Insurance Snag

Dear Donors, Members and Friends,

We are working through an insurance snag. Turns out our previous carrier does not offer the type of insurance we need to meet city requirements for our plaques. Apparently, what we’re doing is unheard of in the insurance world…not sure how that is possible, but we have an insurance agent working on it and are in touch with other historical societies with similar projects. It appears that many of these projects are owned by the municipality, which already has the required insurance.

We are paving a new road, and there is no doubt we will get the coverage we need. You can expect an update as soon as this is resolved.

The trustees and pastor of Holy Covenant are graciously allowing our plaque to be installed directly on the church.

Thank you for being so patient as we establish the inaugural Black Panther Party Heritage Trail in Illinois. Moving forward will be much easier after these initial hurdles.

60th Anniversary of the Black Panther Party: Oct. 15, 2026

The Black Panther Party Heritage Trail in Illinois Open House will take place next year, rather than this year. Along with Oakland and other chapters across the country, the Historical Preservation Society of the Illinois Chapter will celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the founding of the Party on October 15, 2026, at the Chicago Cultural Center.

Oct. 11: Double-Dedication Ceremony, People’s Law Office & Church of the Holy Covenant

Instead of our Open House, we will have a phenomenal program hosted by the People’s Law Office’s Flint Taylor on October 11, a few days before the 59th Anniversary of the BPP’s founding.

We can’t wait to see you at our Double-Dedication Ceremony for the People’s Law Office and Church of the Holy Covenant. It will be a fantastic program.

Come early to view the exhibit!

Registration is encouraged.

Refreshments will be served.
